Like everything else in the game, I don't believe Emon is a "bad" character, but he seems dogmatic and ritualistic his followers (of which only a handful of high-ranking soldiers are shown) are goaded into attacking Wander. Thousands of years later, the views are still held by Emon himself. After all, Emon is praying to something at the game’s end. I do agree with the plot guide in that I believe it was a rival religion, preaching a belief in a pure god, synonymous with light and never dark, that drove the people away from Dormin, gave the "Forbidden Lands" their status and sealed Dormin's essence in the Colossi. It is unlikely that the people would have worshipped, much less built a huge temple for, an evil, horrendous demon. The Shrine is huge, suggesting that it took hundreds, if not thousands of years to build and a large colony of people lived around it, in lands fertile under the god's protection, but due to Dormin's reduced power only the merest scraps remain in the Shrine's garden. It is unlikely this was after the Colossi were created (mostly because Wander has no idea of the Colossi before Dormin says), so it must have been when Dormin was strong and full, perhaps taking a form similar to the dark shadows and walking amongst his followers.

Looking around the game, the very fact that there is a "Shrine of Worship" shows that people once worshipped Dormin. However, Dormin cryptically warns Wander of this, in a way that suits the style of an ancient god and even reminds Wander that what he seeks isn't an ordinary mortal thing. This causes Wander to degenerate, almost as if the process of collecting a god's essence damages a mortal's body. This seems logical each part of Dormin's essence released from the Colossi (these even have different personalities hinting at the various sides of Dormin) is stored in Wander like a vessel until he is "full". Dormin appears as dark shadows clustering around Wander after each colossus is killed, but these do not damage him, indeed, Dormin speaks from light throughout the game! Dormin possesses Wander, but in his old, ancient dialect refers to this as "borrowing", almost as if he means to return Wander's body. Dormin has dark and light, male and female aspects of its character. Even God in the Old Testament is like this! Dormin seems more like these ancient, neutral definitions of a god than anything else. Hey, just look at Greek/Norse/Middle Eastern Mythologies ancient gods are described as being both generous and wrathful, creating wide, fertile lands for their followers and raining fire and brimstone on those against them. But this isn't what ancient cultures, and I believe SoTC's development staff, wanted to show. We've come to see god(s) as "lawfully good" beings, associated with love, repentance and turning the other cheek, even to the extent of towards mortal enemies. In the Christian West, we're immensely coloured by the Bible, and what it says a god should be.

But the one thing I hope the movie doesn't do is make Dormin a vile, slobbering beast. It’s incredibly tempting to do so Dormin does "possess" Wander and together they appear as a massive "demon" at the end of the game. One thing that does tend to annoy me is for people who have never played the game, or only in passing, to label Dormin as "evil". Even though it’s all conjuncture and guesswork, I have my own views on the game.
