(Avernum 4's events date back to the period known as the "Time of Shades") Maybe this ancient evil is the one responsible for the arrival of the shades in Avernum? Or maybe their arrival was just a pure coincidence? Meanwhile, an old evil awakens from the depths of the earth- an evil which has been defeated many years ago and hungers for revenge after being slain by Avernites and awakened by ancient magic. They must be defeated to save the poor townsfolks from a life of slavery to the mysterious creatures. The people of the cities of Silvar, Formello, Almaria, Blosk and Dharmon also need your help regarding some dangerous Shades which mysteriously appeared in those cities and are not leaving.

There's trouble at the Castle and someone has to help them out. However, it seems like this won't be your only adventure. There is a Goblin infestation, and it is your job to remove it. You sign up to the Avernum army, and get assigned to a place called Fort Monastery. Your party is a regular adventuring party. Plagues beset the continent, and if you want to make the place livable, you will have to do what you can to remove these. The continent of Valorim, where you emerge from, is in chaos. Soon, however, you learn that all is not what it seems. After meeting with your boss, Anaximander, you learn that you have been charged with the task of scouting the surface, to ascertain whether or not it is sufficiently livable for your people to emerge once more onto the world above. In Avernum 3, you begin your journey in Fort Emergence, a fort right near the Surface. Not only are the Avernites tough opponents, but they have the advantage of knowing the natural terrain of Avernum, and are accostomed to the dark conditions of the underworld. They initially succeed, however, once the surprise wears out, the Empire soldiers realise that they face an entirely different fight. In retalliation, the Empire proceeds to send down a battallion of troops to wipe out the Avernites. Erika and others have struck back at the Empire, developing in secret a teleporter that goes straight to the Empire's throne room. In Avernum 2, you once are in the subterranean world of Avernum. The adventurers are then faced with defeating Grah-Hoth before enacting revenge on The Empire and ultimately escaping to the surface. However, completing the second of these quests only provokes the long-sealed demon Grah-Hoth, who sends his minions to devastate the far ends of the kingdom. The adventurers are asked first to subdue the Nephilim and later, after meeting King Micah, the Slithzerikai. On arrival, they soon learn that there is a fledgling civilization in the subterranean world, but nearly every human settlement is beset with frequent attacks by Nephilim, Slithzerikai, giants, and various other inconveniences. Avernum 1 centers on four adventurers that have been banished to Avernum for unspecified reasons.
